Simple Page Numbering in Adobe InDesign

Adding page numbering in InDesign to books or documents is a simple process, but through this tutorial I will show you how to automate the process rather then tediously adding numbers manually to each individual page.  Create a new document on InDesign and lets go through how to assign page numbering to it.

1) First open up the Pages Panel.  You will see a little “A” at the corner on the first page – this shows that a Master Page “A” is assigned to this page.  I will go into master pages next.  InDesign automatically created a “A-Master” page with every new document.

2) Master pages in Indesign are pages you can edit to become the template for all pages assigned to that master page.  So what ever you put on a master page (text, shapes, images etc) will appear on all those pages.  This is useful for reoccurring elements such as company logos or page numbering.

To edit a master page, double-click the name or page icons in the Pages panel:

3) You’ll be presented with a page spread.  Select the Text Tool (T) and drag out the text boxes where you want the page numbering to appear.  You will need to make the text box width wide enough for the largest page number your document will have.

4) Make sure you’re still inside the text box with the text tool so that you can write text in.  Now go Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number or simply press the shortcut Alt/Option + Shift + Cmd/Ctrl + N.

5) When applied, the page numbering on the master page should appear as an “A” in the text box.  If you’ve got the pages facing each other, then it’s a good idea to make the page numbering text right aligned on the right-hand page.

6) To see the page numbering in action, click back onto the document page.  You will see a “1″ in where you place the text box.  Next create some new pages to see what happens when you create any new places.

7) When you create any new pages, you will see that the page numbers will be automatically generated in the places you put them in the master page:
